Ways to Keep Your Area Rugs or Carpet Looking Great!

Area rugs and carpets are a joy. They provide the benefits of beauty, comfort, and sound absorption like wall-to-wall carpeting, but without the forever-there commitment. Also, these beauties come in a multitude of styles, colors, and patterns.

Here, we offer some tips to keep your area rug or carpet at its very best:

Clean up spills immediately

Even if it's 'only water,' spills should be cleaned up immediately with paper towels. Blot, don't rub. If it isn't water, follow retail or manufacturer's directions for cleaning. For very grave spills, such as blood, call a professional carpet cleaner immediately.

Vacuum, minus the fringe.

You'll want to keep your rug as clean as possible, so vacuum it regularly. If your vacuum has a HEPA filter, even better, since this will help people in your home who have allergies. Regular vacuuming will also cut down on wear created by dirt being ground into the rug from foot traffic.

Use a carpet pad

A carpet pad will bring extra comfort, stability, and extend the life of your rug.

Avoid do-it-yourself shampooing

The homeowner can easily do many projects around the house, but without proper extraction equipment, your area rug or carpet may end up with an abundance of excess moisture. Moisture is one of the dire enemies of carpet.

Turn your rug

Turning your rug will not only change the traffic pattern but the sunlight pattern as well, to avoid uneven wear and fading. When you turn it, take the time to vacuum the underside and pad. See how dirty it got? Wow!

Clean professionally

Once or twice a year is a fair estimate for having your rugs and carpets cleaned. Adjust accordingly, depending on use. If the area is heavily trafficked, have it cleaned more. But, even if it doesn't look dirty after a year, you should still have it cleaned because the lightest foot traffic still grinds the microscopic dust into carpet fibers. Consider it money spent to protect your investment.

Store it well

If you must store your carpet or rug, never fold it. Instead, clean it, roll it, and store it in a place where it will be protected from light and moisture.

Don't be afraid of change

If you put an area rug or carpet in a specific location, which later proves to be unsuitable due to children, pets, or other factors, move the rug to another room in the house.
